I can drift an MR2!

I can't even begin to express the pure electricity I'm feeling right now. I've been very concerned with my drifting efforts to this point, as a majority of my amusement has been tied to power-over drifting (a.k.a powersliding) well after the apex of a turn. To me, this isn't really drifting at all, and I'd become very frustrated when trying to emulate the practice menu of drift bible.

The short answer is, my car drifts nothing like a hachiroku. Pulling the e-brake into a right-angle turn achieves nothing. The MR-S can't even do a WOT doughnut without exhibiting road-gripping, zero body roll, joy killing oversteer. This is phenomenal for my SOLO2 events, but sometimes you just want an "off" switch.

To my surprise, I've found that the clutch-kicks and e-braking favored by the Nissan guys does very little for me. Downshifting in a corner causes an immediate, irrecoverable loss of control, and e-braking somehow causes understeer.

Tonight, I found a quiet s-curve to practice on. After several runs of crappy understeer, I got frustrated and left. I was pretty upset with my MR2, and myself.

On my way to grab something to eat, I got the inspiration to try something new. Taking the same s-curve, I decided to initiate with heavy braking immediately followed by throttle in the most torque-heavy part of the power band.

Massive fucking success.

I was able to initiate way before the entry point, and even chain the drift (a first for me) on my second pass through the S. Hitting the clipping point for the second curve is tough, and the transition from the second corner to straight driving is less than smooth, but I get it now.

I feel legitimate now. Like I somehow broke through a barrier that separates the fanboys who try real hard to a guy that you would actually consider a drifter.

I can't wait to do it again tomorrow.
